An ultrasound scan that helps the NHS confirm how many weeks pregnant you are, checks how your baby is developing – and gives you an amazing black and white photo to take home By Rachel Mostyn. They will also check that anatomically everything is where should be. Then you get your amazing pictures and you can tell the world! Not necessarily. Dating scans are offered at some point between 8 and 14 weeks, with most of them happening between 11 and 14 weeks. As the transducer gets to work, a black-and-white image of your baby will appear on the monitor that the sonographer is looking at. Private providers may offer this earlier, however. In order to get the full results, the findings of the nuchal translucency NT part of your scan need to be combined with the findings of your blood test. You may find that your EDD is quite a few days later or earlier than you thought.
Ask a midwife: When should I get a dating scan?
An Early Pregnancy Scan sometimes also called a Viability Scan or Dating Scan provides reassurance in this very early stage of your pregnancy. A pregnancy can be seen on scan from as early as 6 weeks from the first day of your last period LMP. We should be able to see a heartbeat from 6 weeks. If you are unsure of your dates or have irregular cycles we do ask that you have a scan two weeks after your first positive pregnancy test.
Sometimes it is requested by a doctor or midwife to confirm that your pregnancy is healthy in this case your scan is often called a viability scan and to calculate the date when your baby is due usually referred to as a dating scan. It can also be performed to confirm the results of a pregnancy test or just to provide you with some reassurance that all is progressing as it should be. At MUMS we are very proud of our professional experienced and caring staff who will ensure that you receive the best care possible and give advice and support where appropriate.
Your reasons for having an Early Pregnancy Scan are to:. Early Pregnancy Scans are normally performed trans-abdominally through your tummy however an internal vaginal scan may be required at earlier gestations weeks to obtain clearer images. This can be due to a number of reasons, for example, if your womb tilts backwards retroverted or it may be that you are less weeks pregnant than you calculated. We will always try to scan trans-abdominally first but if we need to do an internal scan then this will not be harmful in any way to the baby.
We discuss the option of a vaginal scan if needed and only perform if necessary with your consent no additional cost. Ultrasound scans are safe and do not cause discomfort.

Unless there are concerns about the pregnancy it is better to wait to have this scan after 7 weeks as the images are clearer for you to see and better for us to measure. If you come before 7 weeks the baby will be less than 1cm in size and so the scan sometimes has to be performed transvaginally placing the probe inside the vagina to enable us to see the baby well enough to measure and to see the heartbeat.
We ask that you come with a full bladder for this scan as it usually allows us to get the best possible picture of the baby. If you decide to go ahead with this optional screening test you will be offered a scan between 12 weeks and 13 weeks 6 days ideally 12 weeks. This is the only time that this scan can be performed. We send these measurements to LabPlus in Auckland where a blood sample from you is also sent.

There are two types of pregnancies. Those that are planned and those that just happen. The pregnancies that are spontaneous will often make you wonder, when did all this happen? Apart from satiating your curiosity, it has other health-related implications. For instance, there are cases where doctors have unnecessarily induced labour because there is uncertainty about how old the foetus is.
This can result in premature birth. Barring the incredibly meticulous, tracking the exact time of conception can be, at best, a guessing game. A dating scan is a method that is used to reliably assess the age of a foetus with a maximum error of 3 to 5 days.
