Optically-Stimulated Luminescence is a late Quaternary dating technique used to date the last time quartz sediment was exposed to light. As sediment is transported by wind, water, or ice, it is exposed to sunlight and zeroed of any previous luminescence signal. Once this sediment is deposited and subsequently buried, it is removed from light and is exposed to low levels of natural radiation in the surrounding sediment. Through geologic time, quartz minerals accumulate a luminescence signal as ionizing radiation excites electrons within parent nuclei in the crystal lattice. A certain percent of the freed electrons become trapped in defects or holes in the crystal lattice of the quartz sand grain referred to as luminescent centers and accumulate over time Aitken, In our laboratory, these sediments are exposed to an external stimulus blue-green light and the trapped electrons are released. The released electrons emit a photon of light upon recombination at a similar site. In order to relate the luminescence given off by the sample to an age, we first need to obtain the dose equivalent to the burial dose. Following the single-aliquot regenerative SAR method of Murray and Wintle , the dose equivalent De is calculated by first measuring the natural luminescence of a sample.

Objectives To examine indexed health science journals to evaluate the prevalence of Wikipedia citations, identify the journals that publish articles with Wikipedia citations, and determine how Wikipedia is being cited. Study selection Publications in the English language that included citations to Wikipedia were retrieved using the online databases Scopus and Web of Science. Using Thomson Reuters Journal Citation Reports, impact factors were collected for all journals included in the search.

Data extraction Resulting citations were thematically coded, and descriptive statistics were calculated. Results full text articles from journals indexed in Medline, PubMed, or Embase with Wikipedia citations were accessed. The frequency of Wikipedia citations has increased over time; most citations occurred after December

Ionising radiation can be described as the transfer of energy in the form of particles such as alpha and beta particles or electromagnetic waves such as X-rays and gamma rays of a wavelength of nanometres or less or a frequency of 3 x hertz or more capable of producing ions directly or indirectly. Ionising radiation can occur naturally e. Ionising radiation has many uses in industry, such as energy production, manufacturing, medicine and research and produces many benefits to society. However, ionising radiation attacks the cells of the body by producing chemical changes in the cell DNA, leading to abnormal cell growth, therefore it is important that exposures are managed sensibly to protect workers.

The effect on body tissues will depend on: the type of radiation, the dose and duration of exposure and whether the source is internal or external to the body. A criterion and three principles for control time, distance and shielding are used to ensure that ionising radiation exposure is kept to a minimum. We are familiar with many types of radiations in our everyday lives.

Even visible light is a form of radiation. The main difference between ionising and non-ionising radiation is in the amount of energy the radiation carries. Ionising radiation carries more energy than non-ionising radiation. It has such high energy that when travelling through matter, it knocks electrons from the atoms. This process is called ionisation.

Radiometric dating is a technique used to date materials based on a knowledge stimulated luminescence dating; potassium-argon (K-Ar); radiocarbon dating.

Dating techniques of interest to archaeologists include thermoluminescence, optically stimulated luminescence, electron spin resonance, and fission track dating, as well as techniques that depend on annual bands or layers, such as dendrochronology , tephrochronology , and varve chronology. Single Quartz OSL ages can be determined typically from to , years BP, and can be reliable when suitable methods are used and proper checks are done.

Optical dating using Optically stimulated luminescence OSL has been used on sediments. In multiple-aliquot testing, a number of grains of sand are stimulated at the same time and the resulting luminescence signature is averaged. In contrast to the multiple-aliquot method, the Single-aliquot-regenerative-dose SAR method tests the burial ages of individual grains of sand which are then plotted. Mixed deposits can be identified and taken into consideration when determining the age [5].

Pages in “Bone from a Dry Sea”, start with Vinny waking up and really go over her morning. It starts out with her waking up and exploring the camp a little more in the day light, but it proceeds to go into an in depth conversation she soon has with her father about a book that she had read about the theory that we, humans, evolved from half sea animals. This theory is dismissed by her dad when he states, “I wouldn’t know. I’m only a taphonomist” pp.

Later in this chapter Vinny observes a young man named Nikki as he draws a picture of a fossil.

Aim of an extensive research project is an analysis of surface properties of Moon’s regolith covering and the assessment of the possible existence of usable water on the Moon. In the present paper a short historical survey on Moon’s exploration and recent and planned missions is given. Recent recognitions are discussed on the basis of origin and history of the Moon and the import of water from other celestial bodies.

Characteristic data and chemical composition of the Moon’s surface are summarised with respect to possible water or ice preservation.

Author : Paul Held, Ph. Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer FRET is a physical phenomenon first described over 50 years ago, that is being used more and more in biomedical research and drug discovery today. FRET relies on the distance-dependent transfer of energy from a donor molecule to an acceptor molecule. Due to its sensitivity to distance, FRET has been used to investigate molecular interactions.

OSL is an acronym for Optically-Stimulated Luminescence. Optically-Stimulated Luminescence is a late Quaternary dating technique used to date the last time.

From Wikipedia the free encyclopedia. Relative dating is the science of determining the relative order of past events i. In geology, rock or superficial deposits , fossils and lithologies can be used to correlate one stratigraphic column with another. Prior to the discovery of radiometric dating in the early 20th century, which provided a means of absolute dating , archaeologists and geologists used relative dating to determine ages of materials.

Though relative dating can only determine the sequential order in which a series of events occurred, not when they occurred, it remains a useful technique. Relative dating by biostratigraphy is the preferred method in paleontology and is, in some respects, more accurate. The regular order of the occurrence of fossils in rock layers was discovered around by William Smith. While digging the Somerset Coal Canal in southwest England, he found that fossils were always in the same order in the rock layers.

As he continued his job as a surveyor , he found the same patterns across England. He also found that certain animals were in only certain layers and that they were in the same layers all across England. Due to that discovery, Smith was able to recognize the order that the rocks were formed. Sixteen years after his discovery, he published a geological map of England showing the rocks of different geologic time eras.

Radiometric dating is a technique used to date materials based on a knowledge of the decay rates of naturally occurring isotopes , and the current abundances. It is our principal source of information about the age of the Earth and a significant source of information about rates of evolutionary change. All ordinary matter is made up of combinations of chemical elements , each with its own atomic number , indicating the number of protons in the atomic nucleus.
